Lake Samish Runs Race Report:
Race Date January 6, 2007
The weather outlook for raceday was grim – wet, windy and cold. Luckily we missed the wet and windy part. We did have the cold part, but it was other wise a beautiful January day with a light mist hovering above Lake Samish. Nearly 180 runners turned out to participate in this years races – 112 competing in the 6.5 mile event and 65 participants in the half marathon.
The winners of the 6.5 mile event were Travis Harris (34:40) and Sarah Kok (42:36). The half marathon winners were Kurt Hartmaier (1:13:10) and Bridget Knutson (1:37:44). Congratulations to our winners and to everyone who came out for the GBRC’s first race of 2007.
These runs could not happen without our volunteers. The GBRC has fantastic members who actually called us to help out! Our volunteers this year were indeed among the best ever – they were competent, fun and able to work independently. We’d like to thank: Jean LaValley, Rick Hill, Al Reimer, Gale Pfueller, Donna Rode, Theresa Westfall, Cathy Cushing, Linda & George Mariz, Carolyn Nordtvedt, Patsy Goodhope, Georgann Keenan, Sharon Ensslen, Cheryl Batty, Bill Thibodeau, Art Lee, Paul Haskins, Mark Steinberg, Kevin Fazio, Glenn Gervais, Mary, Kim Boon, Karen Carter, members of the Squalicum High School Girls Cross-Country Team: Bronwyn, Sveta, Sara, Emily, Sophie and moms Diane Schick and Sandy Crossman. If we’ve missed anyone, our apologies and THANKS!
We’d also like to thank Paul Haskins, Adventures NW Magazine and the Whidbey Island Marathon folks for donating an entry to their marathon or half marathon on April 15, 2007. We did a random drawing amongst participants and the lucky winner is Julie Smolkin!
Thanks also to Great Harvest Bread for once again supporting the GBRC with their generous donation of delicious, healthy breads for our racers.
Have a great year and we hope to see you next January.
