Location: Fazio Residence
In Attendance: Len, Gale, Alta, Vicki, Alison, Christy, Renee, Carolyn, Tjalling, Bill, Rick Libsack, Todd Elsworth. Stamping and labeling newsletters was the first order of business.
Bellingham Traverse: Todd Elsworth spoke to the board about the Bellingham Traverse, a multi-sport challenge to simulate the life cycle of the salmon. Todd is organizing the event and is seeking club support and volunteers for the run leg. Christy questioned liability of the club because it is not our event and took issue with the Traverse website which claims alliance with the GBRC. Discussion following his presentation resulted in: keeping GBRC out of the alliance group, recommending Todd ask his sponsors to sign up volunteers, allowing flyers and/or posters at the Lake Padden Relay, allowing a link to our website. Len will inform Todd of our decisions.
Treasurer's Report: Gale presented the financial report for the first half of 2002.
Membership: Alta reported we have 531 members and send out 365 newsletters.
Events/Activities Committee: The club will have its first hash run on Aug. 1 at 6PM, meeting in the Sehome High parking lot. Richard Lewis is setting the course (4-5 mi.). Refreshments will follow the run. On Aug. 18, 5:30PM at Fairhaven Park there will a Prediction Run with 1 and 2 mile categories. A potluck dinner will be after the event. A reminder postcard was sent.
Race Director Liaison: Tjalling announced the Chuckanut 50K has 2 potential volunteer co-directors: Krissy Moehl and Brandon Sybrowsky. They need to become club members, but both have ultra-running experience. Race directors are not using the kilometer markers. A call for volunteers to establish kilometer measurements for races should be in the newsletter. Perhaps it could be a high school project.
Tech Coordinator/ Equipment Manager: Rick reported that road permits are OK for the rest of the year. The conflict with the WTA over the Haggen to Haggen racecourse was due to the WTA signing the permit, then trying to change their consent a week later.
A few course changes will need to be made for next year's H to H. Race directors should not use paint on pavement to mark courses because it is permanent.
Bill repaired the scanner so Vicki will not need a new one.
Rick wants to retire as tech/equipment manager due to more involvement with Whatcom Symphony.
Old Business: High School Scholarships of $500 each were awarded to Meredith Curtis and Matt Crabtree for college in the fall. WWU scholarships of $500 each will be given in December. Tjalling will communicate with current race directors to confirm that they will do the job in 2003.
New business: The club needs new staplers for the results board. Two-sided tape is also needed as an option for affixing race pull-off tags. Haggen is continuing to support the club with a $2000 donation. The board questioned whether Superfeet (sponsor of the Chuckanut Footrace) would contribute anything, but the race directors weren't available for comment.
Website: Bill printed a graph showing Chuckanut Footrace page hits. The numbers of hits increased dramatically by the end of June and hits on the 2002 results remained very high as of July 24.
Action Items: 1) Should the club increase membership or race fees? 2) Tjalling will talk with the Larrabee ranger regarding mileage posts. 3) Cross country training will need waivers signed by participants. 4) Len will do a preliminary budget for 2003. 5) Website update?
Next board meeting: September 26 at 7PM at Vicki's, 2116 Niagara. All members are welcome.
